Car Tire Size / Speed rating chart
Tire speed rating chart
The speed rating is the letter at the very end of the size: H in 225/65R17 102H. It is the highest speed the tire is built to carry its load at. Here is every letter you will find on a car, SUV or pickup tire.
| Letter | Up to, mph | Up to, km/h |
|---|---|---|
| L | 75 | 120 |
| M | 81 | 130 |
| N | 87 | 140 |
| P | 93 | 150 |
| Q | 99 | 160 |
| R | 106 | 170 |
| S | 112 | 180 |
| T | 118 | 190 |
| U | 124 | 200 |
| H | 130 | 210 |
| V | 149 | 240 |
| W | 168 | 270 |
| Y | 186 | 300 |
Three things the letters do not say
- H is out of order. It sits between U and V: 130 mph, above U (124 mph).
- ZR in the size (225/45ZR17) is an older mark for tires rated above 149 mph. When the size also ends with W or Y, that letter is the real rating.
- Not a speed to drive at. The rating is a tire test result; speed limits and your car still decide. When you replace tires, keep a rating at least as high as the one your vehicle maker lists.
Sources: Santa Ana Wheel, "Tire speed rating chart" (santaanawheel.com) and Wikipedia, "Tire code", read October 14, 2026. The km/h values are the official ones and both sources agree on each; mph is converted from km/h and rounded, so some charts show P and Q as 94 and 100 mph.
